Birthday Party {Event Photography} Riverton, Utah

This past weekend we had the opportunity to photograph our sweet little Rachel's 3rd Birthday party! We've known Rachel since birth and have absolutely loved the pleasure of knowing her.

Rachel's party was at Rock Creek Pizza, just next door to our studio (How convenient!). And man do her parents know how to throw a party!

Everyone had unlimited salad and pizza, which makes anyone happy!

They reserved an entire conference room for their party, so the kiddos could run wild without parents having to worry!

Rachel was a doll the entire time! She loved the attention!

Check out this piece of cake...it's almost the size of Rachel! I love this picture because Rachel doesn't eat yet, but it sure looks like she's about to dive into the cake!

Utah Children's Photography {Little Girls}

Spring is here and the spring fashions are fabulous! We've had so many little girls in our studio lately that we feel like we oughta put on a little fashion show for you!

There is something magical about little girls. Their shyness melts to diva in about as many seconds as it takes you to turn the radio up a notch and show 'em how to boogie! Both of these chicas came in as quiet as a mouse. One of them left as an airplane, piggy back, and the other strutted out my front doors with bare feet and her Daddy's wallet in her pocket! I love little girls!

New Backdrops {Riverton Utah Photography}

We opened our doors four years ago. Can you believe that? It literally seems like yesterday. We've added props and backdrops along the way to keep current and even ahead of the game, but lately, we were craving a drastic change. We purchased three new backdrops a few weeks ago and we got them in this week. All three backdrops went up today, as we were packed with families, babies, seniors and we wanted to put them to good use.

The above backdrop is sort of an Italian Tile. It's a beautiful copper color, but I loved the look in Sepia as well. It's absolutely gorgeous for families, newborns, seniors...you name it!

This one is a tiny little backdrop, perfect for a newborn or a solo shot. The texture is fantastic and easy to manipulate, should I want to tweak it a bit.

This has to be my favorite! Doesn't this look like I took these two sweeties and plopped them down in an alley? Of course, I added the puddles as an after effect, but the bricks are so real I can hardly stand it. I love this! I can't wait to see what else comes of this one.

Graduation is just around the corner! Seniors are starting to rush in for their sessions and now that the weather is warming up, we can't wait to get outside and enjoy the sun!

Bronte was our last snow session of the year...or at least that's what the weatherman is telling us. She was such a trooper and even after a number of us falling through ice, we had a blast and all made it home alive with some incredible shots to share. Keep an eye out for more.

Megan has been interning here at Kathryn Michaels Photography so of course, we love to spoil her with pictures. The portrait on the right was actually an accident that produced a beautiful image. Megan was posing for me as an aide in a restoration I was working on. I was in need of a woman with her arm behind her back and knew I'd get the best quality if I took the image myself. So, Megan obliged and after reviewing the images to find the best arm, we stumbled up this and loved the composition...the rest is history.

I look forward to first birthday sessions for so many reasons. First, and foremost, a child I have followed since birth is finally turning one and I get to be the lucky one to photograph the day. Second, nothing makes me smile like a child digging into a birthday cake for the first time. Lastly, the studio smells so sweet and delicious after the shoot that I just want to lick the walls!

Addy turns one next month and seriously, how sweet are those big blue eyes? Adelyn was so good at covering herself in frosting that I could have just eaten her up by the end of the session.

Each flower goes through a top secret process to make them look and feel the way they do and they're topped off with an adorable button to complete the design. If I had to choose a favorite type of session, I suppose I'd have to pick our Newborn Sessions. There's nothing quite like spending two hours in a warm room, just playing and photographing a 5-day-old. We typically suggest bringing babies in within their first week to capture the newness about them that fades so quickly.

This little guy, Landon, came in at about two months however, and look how stunning these shots are!

We love to focus on the baby, but his cute little hat was too much fun to pass up. He was a doll to have in the studio and we look forward to seeing him several more times throughout the year.

Maternity photos are some of our favorites! We love to be at the very beginning of a life and be a part of the excitement! We recently had Rene and her husband Cody into our studio for a maternity shoot and after the formals, and the classics, and the casuals, and the photojournalistic, we decided to throw aside all the rules and really get the party started. My absolute favorite picture is really a work of art and it was the last shot of the day.

The emotion in this picture just blows me away. I can totally see Rene at home, at the beginning of labor, pacing the floors, and Cody taking her hand in his, resting his head on hers and helping her breathe while counting the contractions. It's miraculous, this thing called life, and I love being able to capture such wonderful moments.

Having been a NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) nurse in my former life, I developed a love for teeny tiny, scrawny little babies. For a long time, the chubby, 8 pound babies scared me. They were so big and heavy! Nowadays, working with lots of healthy, wonderful babies, I have to say...I love a full-figured baby! Today we photographed this little angel...

I think Marie Osmond needs to make a porcelain doll out of this one!

Born 4 weeks early and spending the first two weeks in the NICU, it is SO fun to see her so big and healthy!

Dan and I are going to jail today for "good." We're being sent to jail to raise money and awareness for MDA (aka Jerry's Kids). Our bail is set at $1200 and if we reach that DAN WILL SHAVE HIS HEAD!

If we can surpass our goal and make it to $4000, I WILL SHAVE MY HEAD! We could use any little bit of help here. We're a long ways off from our goal and we don't want to let the MDA down. It's 100% tax deductible so not only will it make you feel good, but you'll also get it all back in April of 2010!

Homes For Our Troops

Today Dan and I were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to volunteer for an organization called Home For Our Troops. I was contacted by the organization several months ago and asked to donate time and photography. The organization is dedicated to providing homes to severely wounded veterans.

Bryant Jacobs, a 28-year-old veteran from Herriman, UT was wounded by a road-side bomb. After 37 surgeries, he's up and walking, although not without much hardship. He is also missing his large intestine, which makes daily activities very challenging.

Today, Homes For Our Troops raised the walls to his new home. Located against the base of the Oquirrh Mountains, it has an amazing view, but not only that, it has special adjustments meant to make living easier for Jacobs.

Fox 13 was there to document the event. See their coverage here. Dan and I will be back to document more of the event tomorrow and Thursday, here are some of my favorites from today.

It's that time!

Bust out your cutest accessories and doll up that baby! The Miller's National Baby and Child Portrait Contest is here and Kathryn Michaels Photography is taking appointments!

Last year, we won 1st place in the "Special Needs" category, winning the Giles family $2000! This year, we're aiming for overall 1st, with a prize of $5000. It could be yours! All you have to do is book a 30 minute session for $35 and you could win!

Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep

With the Month of October being recognized as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, The Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep Foundation holds its Annual Fund Drive for six weeks starting in mid-September and ending in October.

President Ronald Reagan enacted Proclamation 5890 in October of 1988 to recognize that each year, approximately a million pregnancies in the United States alone end in miscarriage, stillbirth, or the death of a newborn child. Reagan stated, "A national observance offers us the opportunity to increase our understanding of the great tragedy involved in the deaths of unborn or newborn babies. It also enables us to consider how, as individuals and communities, we can meet the needs of bereaved parents and family members... " To read the full Proclamation signed by Reagan, CLICK HERE.

I wanted to take this moment to let you all in on a little secret. When I can't sleep at night or when I have a day off, I LOVE to read other blogs. I love to read what other people are doing, read their ideas, see their pictures...it's definitely a guilty pleasure of mine.

Recently, I stumbled across an INCREDIBLE blog for mothers (and those of us who intend on becoming mothers someday). The author is right here in our very own Sandy, Utah. Her blog is SuperMom Central. I was able to get in touch with Lauren, the author, through a friend and because I was SO impressed with her site, offered her some freebies for her readers. National Award-Winning Photographer

Today was a pretty exciting day. I received a call this morning from a national photography contest that I had entered earlier this year. Approximately 15,000 photos were entered in the contest among four different categories (Color, Black and White/Sepia, Humorous, and Special Needs). The call was to inform me that I had won first place in the "Special Needs" category. The picture I had taken was one of a stillborn infant whom I was blessed to meet through Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep.

What an honor it is to be listed with such talented photographers from around the country. The bigger honor, however, is that as my prize, I now get to present the parents of this beautiful baby with $2000. What a day! It doesn't get much better than that.

It's been a while

Alrighty! I'm back, for a bit. It's been wonderfully busy for the past three weeks, but I'll try not to let that be an excuse as to why I'm not blogging.

I've had some very fun shoots over the past few weeks, a few large family reunions, some itty bitty babies, and a few in-betweeners. The photo of the week (to the right) is of identical twins who came in for their baptism announcements. I love the contrast of the image, such serious faces for such a fun age. The three of us had a lot of fun and captured some amazing pictures for their announcements, but I chose this image for the serenity it portrayed. Whaddaya think?

Currently I'm preparing for my own family reunion. Thirty-two Stouts are spending the week in Colorado...there'll surely be one or two great shots from that.

I'll do my best to blog while there, but I can't promise anything. I'll definitely get some shots up when I get home however.

Good Things Utah

Yesterday I had the awesome privilege of being part of the Good Things Utah studio audience. Now, I don't have cable or even an antenna but I knew of this show so I was excited to take a sneak peek. I was invited as a business owner to get an idea of what the show was about, so watch out Utah, perhaps I'll be making my TV debut sometime soon.

What's up Riverton?

Here's something you probably didn't know about me, I'm sort of an adrenaline junky. I've chased Beracudas in Florida (although, I think 50% of that was stupidity, not just my need for a rush). I celebrated my college graduation by skydiving over the Salt Lake. On a trip to Ohio last year I rode the world's highest, fastest, steepest roller-coaster (at least, it was at the time. I think Tokyo has us beat by a few mph now). This year my goal is to ride the slingshot at six flags. So, when I saw the carnival at Riverton Park this weekend, I thought it'd be a fun trip for the nieces and nephews. I took them on a few rides, played a few carnival games, bought some funnel cake and then it was Aunt Kak's turn. I had my eye on one ride but wasn't too excited, afterall, it's just a carnival ride, right?

Well my friends, Spin Out is incredible, and completely worth your 4 tickets. I actually enjoyed it so much I took the sister-in-law back later that night for a ride. It's definitely disorienting and it gives your the feeling of free-fall for a continuous 20 seconds (or so). And just in case that wasn't exciting enough, there's always the added thrill that maybe the screws aren't exactly tight, ya know, being a traveling carnival, those rides are assembled in record time! Pretty exciting for our little Riverton, if you ask me. If you're looking for something to do on an evening this week, check out Carnival City at Riverton Park (12700 S. 1300 W.).

Oh, and in case you were wondering, the funnel cake is just as amazing...just about as close to Dunkin Donuts as you can get here in Utah (oh, make that two things you probably didn't know about me). Oh well, we all have our weak spots, don't we? :)

I've decided to do something kind of fun on this site, "The Picture of the Week!" As you can see, to your right, the first image has been added. I'm going to try to post one picture a week (preferably taken that week, but not necessarily) just to post some of my favorite, most recent work.

So, this week is Josie. Josie was the bride of the wedding I shot last week down in 114-degree Arizona. It was hot and I was dripping with sweat, but Josie remained beautiful to the very end! That alone deserves a round-of-applause!

Wrapping Up

I've wrapped up the shooting in Connecticut and made my way back West to shoot a wedding in Arizona. It's been a whirlwind of a trip but I've captured some GREAT shots that I'm excited to proof next week.

It's amazing how the climate has changed from Connecticut to Arizona. I've gone from extremely hot and humid to extremely hot and dry. My poor skin is going to throw itself into all sorts of confusion soon enough.

Tonight at the rehearsal for the wedding tomorrow I captured a great shot of little Ethan looking out the window at his Mommy...check it out:

East Coast Locations

This week I'm in Connecticut for our annual East Coast Event. I'm here for five days to photograph families in the lush green forests and the sunny, sandy beaches. It's hot and humid but the locations are wonderful!

I took a red-eye to JFK and was able to capture this fun image on my cell-phone as we landed. The sunset was an intense red and above the lights of the city it was quite the sight. On my way home I'll be toting my studio camera in hopes of capturing a similar sight.

I'm staying with my sister's family while I'm out here. They have a wonderfully-full house with six little boys ages 9 and under. The two youngest happen to be one-and-a-half-year-old twins whom I was in charge of watching yesterday. When they woke up from their naps I snapped this fun shot of Jericho wondering who I was and where was his Mommy.

Cute kid huh?

Anyway, it's going to be a crazy week, but I'll blog when I can. Enjoy your week!

Riverton Arts Festival

June 7th, 8th, and 9th we had so much fun taking a small corner of our studio and displaying it for the Riverton Arts Festival. We met hundreds of neighbors and made several new friends, not to mention, tasted THE BEST Philly Cheesesteak Sandwiches EVER from Vito's, a street vendor stationed in Bountiful.

Here's a low-quality picture of our booth (it's what happens when the photographer's left with a camera phone)...I think it turned out pretty excellent, if I do say so myself.

We are still selling our unique notecards as well as the hit of the show, our framed Gerbera Daisy Prints. If I can find the time, I'll blog a list of items for sale with images for those of you who were unable to make it to the festival.
